Our conversation was framed by four great leaders who have had a major impact on my life and ministry. Transformational Leaders Must Be Transformed
I learned at the onset of my leadership journey that I couldn’t be an agent of change unless I was a product of change! To the degree you are willing to be changed will determine how much change you can catalyze. Bishop Thompson mirrored the power of prayer and scripture to change the leader first! You often hear me say that “I live to add value to leaders!” What does that mean and how does that happen?
I am convinced that too many people live life to add value to themselves. To increase their income, their influence, and their inroads. Too often, even leaders think of material possessions first. What can I get out of it? How much will they pay me? I promise you that a life lived beneath the shadow of materialism is a dark and shallow life. Others live to have influence or power over others to get something for themselves. Notoriety, opportunities, and sometimes infamy becomes the result of all they do. Still, others live to be in certain circles, to make inroads into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. And while many of these things are not morally wrong within themselves yet the constant pursuit of them above all else is a dangerous and unfulfilling life to live.

Whether we like it or not, change is inevitable! When you see change happening in your life, the answer isn’t to simply endure it or implode because of it, it is to innovate! Big shifts and changes in your life will require great risks—don’t be afraid of taking these risks so that you can live out the plan God has for you!
As a leader I have watched miracles of answered prayer for our children, reconciliation in relationships, change in hearts, and provision for our needs. Sometimes I’m tempted to say thank you and then wait for more, but I realize that my Friend expects me to lead and lead well. Some days I can imagine my Friend saying: “Listen, I’ll keep doing My part, but I need you to make sure you handle your part. I’ll lead you out of the prison and take you into the city. I’ll change your heart. I’ll change the hearts of others toward you. I’ll do the things you can’t possibly do. But you must make the adjustments you can make.” So we must fill our hearts with wisdom so we can show others how to do their part!
Just as limitations and prison experiences teach us obedience, so do prison breaks. In something as risky as breaking away from those guards, we don’t want to be the ones leading without a commitment to lead well. We won't...
